Overview
The Bukchon Hanok Village, located in Seoul, South Korea, is known for its rich and distinguished past. It is at the top of a hill and is surrounded Jongmyo Royal Palace and Gyeongbok Palace. It is a traditional village, filled with Hanoks, traditional Korean houses and alleys. It is a 600-year-old urban colony that has been preserved with great care. Bukchon, a Korean word meaning “northern village”, is the area south of the Jongno and Cheonggyecheon streams.
According to legend, the Bukchon area was made up of five neighborhoods – Jae, Gye, Insadong and Gahoe–dong. These were the areas where the Joseon Dynasty’s high-ranking bureaucrats, additional officers and nobility lived. The area became populated after wars and other disasters. There are many Hanok restaurants in the village that offer traditional dishes and tea. You will also find many museums and cultural centers here. Your experience here would be unforgettable even if there was no Bukchon Hanok Village entry fee!
